In December 2024, Telangana’s BC Welfare Minister, Ponnam Prabhakar, urged public representatives and senior officials to personally visit welfare hostels across the state to ensure better monitoring of living conditions and welfare measures for students. He encouraged leaders, including district collectors, IAS, and IPS officers, to spend time with the students, even sharing meals with them to gain a deeper understanding of their daily needs and challenges. This initiative reflects Prabhakar’s commitment to improving student welfare through direct engagement and oversight.
The call for better oversight aligns with the Telangana government’s ongoing efforts to improve hostel conditions. Notably, the government has implemented significant changes, including a 40% increase in diet charges and a 200% rise in cosmetic charges, benefiting nearly 8 lakh students across SC, ST, BC, and minority hostels. Furthermore, the government has allocated ₹667.25 crore for infrastructure upgrades in schools. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka have shown their support for the initiative by conducting surprise inspections and engaging directly with students. Minister Prabhakar also visited the BC Hostel in Lalapet to assess the conditions and interact with students. This initiative demonstrates the government’s ongoing commitment to student welfare and the successful implementation of welfare programs in the state.
