In November 2024, Telangana launched a comprehensive Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy to combat air pollution and promote sustainable transportation across the state. Announced by Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, the policy offers a 100% exemption on road tax and registration fees for all electric vehicles, including two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and commercial vehicles, for the period from November 18, 2024, to December 31, 2026. This incentive is expected to encourage greater adoption of EVs, supporting the state’s environmental goals.

A major aspect of the policy is the phased replacement of around 3,000 diesel buses with electric buses in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area. This move aligns with the government’s commitment to reducing vehicular emissions and enhancing the city’s air quality. Minister Prabhakar highlighted that this initiative is part of a broader effort to transform Telangana’s transport system, under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, with the goal of making Hyderabad a cleaner, greener city. The policy also emphasizes expanding EV charging infrastructure in urban areas, towns, and along state and national highways, further facilitating the transition to electric mobility. Through this EV policy, Telangana aims to reduce air pollution, promote energy efficiency, and establish a more sustainable future for the state’s transportation system.
