On November 24, 2024, Telangana’s Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar announced that the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) has successfully turned a profit after a year of incurring losses.
Key Developments:
- Mahalakshmi Scheme’s Impact: The Mahalakshmi scheme, which provides free bus travel to women, has played a crucial role in this turnaround. By November 20, 2024, around 1.11 crore zero-fare tickets were issued, saving women passengers Rs 3,747 crore.
- Increased Occupancy: The scheme contributed to a significant rise in the TSRTC’s occupancy ratio, which climbed from 69% to 94%, with women now making up 65.56% of the total passengers.
- Expansion Plans: Minister Prabhakar highlighted the need for expanding the bus fleet to accommodate the growing number of passengers, particularly women commuters, as demand continues to rise.
These initiatives underscore the Telangana government’s commitment to improving public transportation services and making them more accessible and affordable for all citizens.
